Geochemistry is the application of chemistry to explain the relative abundance, distribution and migration of chemical elements and their isotopes in terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environments
Identifying processes that control the composition, flux and fate of chemicals in an environmental system allows us to understand, predict and mitigate the impacts of human activities on ecosystem health and sustainability.
We provide a range of specialised geochemical services such as geochemical modelling, isotopic source assessment, bench-scale laboratory treatment studies, groundwater tracer studies, contaminant transport modelling, and geochemical and hydrocarbon fingerprinting.
BTEX Source Assessment
Our staff completed investigations into the source of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in produced water to support regulatory compliance requirements for a pilot coal seam gas recovery well in Queensland, Australia.
We used compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) combined with leaching tests and hierarchical clustering analysis to identify the sources of BTEX compounds.
Groundwater Sulfate Source Assessment
Our staff conducted a source apportionment assessment for sulphate in groundwater downstream of a tailings storage facility (TSF) to support regulatory compliance and development of seepage management options for a metal sulphide mine in West Pilbara, Western Australia.
We used a combination of mineralogical, major ions and trace metal analysis, geochemical modelling and stable isotope analysis (34-S, 18-O and 2-H) to identify the sources of elevated sulphur in downstream groundwater.
